An independent journalist required an audio sample to market for potential podcast opportunities. The audio sample was to be edited and produced into a concise and cohesive story focusing on Saint Joseph Friary, located in Harlem.

Role: Sound design, editing, post-production

Timeline: 5 days

Challenge

Upon project kick off, the client presented a groundwork of audio clips and a script outlining the idea for an audio sample.

To better understand the clients' goals, I conducted an initial in-take. I inquired on the production and experience of recording interviews (memorable moments / challenges) and the core message of the story.

Strategy

Once the client and I solidified project goals and timeline, I began developing a strategy for a more robust storytelling experience. The strategy consisted of the following:

  • Acquiring project assets

  • Developing familiarity of audio content and script

  • Establishing on-going client involvement and collaboration

  • Creating and implementing a “shot list” of sound effects required to fill gaps in audio

  • Synthesizing client feedback to generate multiple versions of the audio sample

Ideation

Building a compelling story can be achieved by identifying key moments and understanding the clients’ vision. Analyzing the audio content allowed me to expand on the script and tone of the story.

Audio post-production summary

I provided expertise in audio editing/post-production and offered suggestions in arrangement. Concurrently, I recorded necessary foley sound effects in order to produce a richer storytelling experience. Furthermore, my responsibilities included audio treatment (i.e. Noise reduction, EQ, compression, etc), mix down, and adhering to ITU Standards.

Results

Throughout the project, the client and I kept communications open. I created several iterations of the audio sample in order to achieve the vision of my client.

The client was thrilled at the progress made, and signed off on the final version. It was a rewarding experience for both the client and myself to work on the audio sample.
